This early etching by Finnish artist Jalmari Ruokokoski captures a stark, almost architectural quietness. A row of angular houses dominates the composition, their steeply pitched roofs and geometric façades rendered in fine, textural linework. The central stepped gable recalls Northern European vernacular architecture, while the curving path in the foreground adds a subtle rhythm to the otherwise rigid scene.
Executed in 1913, the work reflects Ruokokoski’s early exploration of structure and space before his later shift towards more expressive colourism in painting. Here, in monochrome, he meditates on form and shadow, creating a moody and introspective atmosphere. The signature "J.R." in the plate and full signature below confirm its authorship during a formative moment in his career.
