A romantic landscape with a ruined tower perched on a rocky crag above a mountain lake, where small sailing boats drift in the distance. Trees frame the scene at either side, and a sunlit path in the foreground leads the eye towards the misty peaks. Imaginary scenes like this, inspired by the castles of the Rhine and the Alps, were popular decorative pictures throughout the 19th century.
