Here we have another round of excellent pieces — big, small, and everything that might be squeezed in between. I was particularly taken with the works on Marc Kitchen Smith’s website; one or two struck me as especially good.

Autumn practically herds us into pubs, and who are we to resist? Inside, the lights glow like stage spots, the dishes arrive with a reassuring heft, and the drinks have just enough spice to make you feel deliciously indulgent. The fires crackle, the conversation sparkles, and the chill outside becomes someone else’s problem. These, we think, are the best places to play out the season.

At Tat, we like to keep a few small pleasures on the horizon — a perfectly mixed martini, a meander through a museum, or, more often than not, a night away. And just because the summer holidays have had their swansong doesn’t mean the chance for escape has vanished.
