Tat London Journal

Amidst the haze of the first Covid lock down, a long Instagram scrolling session became particularly fruitful. Little did I know that 6 years later I would be celebrating at the most perfect wedding of said fruit, nor that we would work together and become friends - but much has to be said for the internet when it forges meaningful relationships and ties together people who might otherwise have been forever strangers. Any way back to the scrolling. My swipe up was arrested by

If you have visited the Battersea Decorative Fair in the last few years you will have at some point come across the delights of Foster & Gane. In my humble opinion they were one of the anchors of the fair their stand was no white cube. It was a world within that fair. Here Ed & Val, the mother and son team behind Foster & Gane, would create an intimate setting, where the distinctiveness of the pieces and the design they interwove made one feel quite at home. Yes, finer than a

One of our first posts on Instagram, way back when it was still quite unusual to share anything other than your breakfast or a mass of cherry blossom, featured a photograph that has stayed with me ever since. It was the bathroom of Garth Gell Farmhouse in Wales, a building dating back to 1805 that had been left to fall into ruin since the middle of the last century.

My initial meeting with Ruth Sleightholme was on my first day at House & Garden. She let me into the office on the fourth floor and showed me to my new desk in the corner of the Decoration Department. I was to be the Decoration Assistant, where I would help the stylists on their shoots.

With some Tête-à-Tat’s I rely on research. I listen to old podcasts, I read articles, I trawl the far corners of the internet to pick up anything I can about the interviewee. For poor TF, I simply phoned him to have a quick tête-à-tête about this Tête-à-Tat. I say poor, as I am sure we have all been there, when there is something vast that you are working on. It is not tomorrow, but it is in the near future, and you are stuck in that space where the t’s are crossed but there

I don’t think it will come as any surprise that we are thrilled by property. The reason we began our property features was simple. I was searching for houses morning, noon and night. No, I wasn’t moving. I was simply keen to see what was on my street, in my neighbourhood, just outside London and then, as any normal person would, what lay in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, the Borders and so on. I blame Country Life for this affliction. Their front pages were the gateway drug and

Cox. A simple name, yet one that is fast becoming shorthand for quality, creativity and craftsmanship. I have admired Matthew Cox’s work for years. One hesitates to use the phrase quiet luxury, since it has been stretched to cover all manner of things that are anything but. Still, if the term has any meaning left, it lies comfortably with him.

Tete a Tat With Cassandra Ellis 9th June 2025 Cassandra Ellis, Founder of Atelier Ellis, Photographed By Martin Morrell Shopping for paint is one of those tasks that can send even the sanest among us into a complete tizz. You find yourself wobbling over a thousand whites, eyes darting between cards called things like Limestone Whisper or Alaska Halibut . It’s enough to make one feel unhinged. That was certainly me, until I discovered the work of Atelier Ellis, Cassandra Ell

Not many of our Tête-à-Tats start at La Famiglia, but it seems like a suitable place to begin when your subject is as charming as Steven Rod

Melissa Ulfane Melissa Ulfane was always going to be someone with an eye. Born in South Africa but shaped by the salons and galleries of Europe, she developed a taste for the exceptional early on. There are those who collect things in the way that one might absentmindedly pick up shells on a beach, and then there are those, like Ulfane, for whom collecting is an art in itself. Books, paintings, objects with a past, each piece chosen with the heart, knowledge and a clear sense

Jeremy and Cath Brown, Feldspar I have been banging the Tat drum, albeit one with limited reverberation, for the new meaning of luxury: a luxury where the people at the beginning of the chain are as well looked after as those enjoying the fruits of their labour at the end. Where a purchase can positively impact both the environment and the community. If a piece of fashion, homeware, or technology does not meet those requirements, then it simply isn’t luxury. Hopefully, one da

Emily Cameron, Co Founder of Ffern At the beginning of this year, I penned an article predicting that 2024's trends would focus more on how we shop rather than what we shop for. A principle that guides my spending decisions is 'Make It Make Sense'. This is where, instead of concentrating on pieces that come from large, hollow brands whose manufacturing and wealth distribution are murky, to say the least, you spend your hard-earned money on companies you feel safe with, compan
