Vase of Flowers Pierre Alexis Lesage (1872–1932) Oil on cardboard, 1918 Signed, dated and inscribed “To Mrs. Jandin”, lower left
50 cm wide × 45 cm
A single white rose rests in a small glass vase, lit softly against a dark, warm background. A flash of orange foliage behind it adds colour to the quiet scene. Lesage builds the petals with quick, loose brushstrokes and catches the glint of light on the glass in just a few touches. The dedication suggests the painting was made as a personal gift, an intimate still life from the final year of the First World War.
