Executed with a fluid, economical hand, this small pen and ink drawing captures a coastal scene animated by fishing boats at anchor and a cliffside village crowned by a church spire, its rapid, loosely worked lines and passages of vigorous cross-hatching evoking the immediacy of a study made directly from nature; unsigned and of unrecorded authorship, the drawing nonetheless carries the confident, spontaneous character typical of eighteenth-century topographical sketching, and comes with a distinguished provenance from Lowesby Hall.
