A marker drawing by Waldemar Sjölander (1908–1988), a Swedish born artist who later settled in Mexico, where much of his career unfolded. Trained in Sweden before moving abroad in the 1940s, Sjölander became part of a wider group of European artists working within Mexico’s modernist landscape, developing a practice that moved between figuration and abstraction. This portrait reflects that balance, built with confident, economical lines and areas of loose shadow that give structure without overworking the surface. There is a quiet intensity to the face, slightly unsettled but deliberate, held in place by a steady and assured hand.
