Framed Photogravure on Paper, Table Still Life, Kiviküla, Unknown, 1992

Table Still Life, Kiviküla

Kiviküla (Stone Village) Unidentified artist Photogravure on paper, 1992

Framed 31cm x 41 cm

Signed, dated “-92”, titled and inscribed “H.C. Photogravure” in pencil below the image

A bottle, a glass and a shallow bowl sit on a pale tablecloth, softly blurred as if seen through memory. The photogravure process gives the image warm, grainy tones and deep shadows, and the dark, uneven edges of the plate frame the scene like an old photograph. The title names a village in Estonia, and the print was made just after Estonian independence. The “H.C.” marking shows it is an artist’s proof, kept outside the main edition.
