A companion sketch to the preceding drawing, rendered in the same confident, economical hand, this small study reduces a coastal outcrop to a few rapid, gestural strokes, with a lightly indicated vessel adrift in the foreground; the sparing use of line and the loose, atmospheric treatment of the cliff face suggest a work made quickly and directly from observation, in keeping with the informal sketching practices of the period, and it shares the same distinguished provenance from Lowesby Hall.
