A small group of figures gathers on a sandy riverbank beside a long, dark canoe drawn up on the shore, its upturned prow curving against a pale sky. The scene is set down with a few quick, confident strokes: the figures are little more than patches of russet, rose and grey, yet their poses suggest conversation, waiting, or the work of launching the boat.
