Framed Oil, Landscape, by Ernst Wetzenstein (1890-1982)
painting 29 x 40 cm, inc frame 42 x 54 cm (original frame with plaque)
This landscape by Ernst Wetzenstein (1890–1982), a Swedish painter working within the early twentieth century tradition of Nordic landscape painting, depicts a field of haystacks under an open sky, a motif closely associated with rural life in Scandinavia. Wetzenstein belonged to a generation of artists balancing natural observation with a more painterly, modern handling of colour and form, often focusing on agricultural subjects and the changing effects of light across the land, and his work is represented in Swedish regional collections. The present painting, with its rhythmic arrangement of haystacks and clear, structured composition, reflects this approach, while a Swedish presentation plaque dated 1945–1949 records that the work was given to Holmar Björkland by Svenskverkets Bruk AB in recognition of service, placing the painting within the social and industrial context of mid twentieth century Sweden.
