Coastal landscape by the Swedish artist Staffan Hildebrand Engebrand (1920–1999), painted in the bold, simplified manner of mid-twentieth century Scandinavian modernism. Born in Dikanäs in the far north of Sweden, Engebrand trained at Valands målarskola in Gothenburg and is primarily known for his northern mountain landscapes. The composition is reduced to its essentials: a flat expanse of water in viridian and teal, a dark ridge of distant hills, and a pale sky from which a yellow sun casts its reflection directly down into the foreground. Scattered rocks and two small seated figures anchor the shore, rendered in loose, confident strokes that give the scene both intimacy and solitude. Signed lower right. Housed in its original linen-mounted frame.
