The Vase of Flowers
Oil on panel
35 × 27 cm
Signed lower leftA loose bouquet of white blooms rises from a simple glazed earthenware jug, set against a deep, warm brown ground. Cellier builds the petals with thick, quick strokes of cream, ivory and pale pink, so that each flower seems to catch the light and push forward from the shadowy background. The dark green leaves and the jug’s russet glaze anchor the composition in a narrow range of earth tones, letting the whites carry the picture.
A single fallen bloom at the lower left, its long pink stem trailing across the tabletop, breaks the symmetry of the arrangement and adds a note of transience, a quiet reminder of the brief life of cut flowers. Painted on a modest wooden panel, the work has the immediacy of a study made from life, valuing atmosphere and touch over precise botanical detail.
