Artist Biography

Gunnar Wilhelm Hållander, who entered the world on April 21, 1915, in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, emerged as a distinguished painter and graphic artist. His formal education in the arts was brief, attending Otte Sköld's painting school in Stockholm for a short period in 1941, a tenure truncated by the passing of his father. Beyond this formal stint, Hållander was primarily self-educated in his craft. His artistic journey was notably propelled forward in 1950, thanks to a scholarship from the Örnsköldsvik Art Association, which enabled him to immerse himself in the artistic heritage of Paris, Madrid, and Lisbon, closely studying the masterpieces of renowned artists.

Hållander's first major solo exhibition was held in his hometown of Örnsköldsvik in 1945, marking the beginning of a prolific career. He not only showcased his work in solo exhibitions but also featured in numerous group shows across Stockholm, Gothenburg, Gävle, and Norrland. His artistry is celebrated for its captivating still lifes and abstract paintings, rendered primarily in oils, as well as his vibrant colour woodcuts.

His contributions to art did not go unnoticed, with his works securing places in prestigious public collections, including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Sundsvall Museum, and the Institut Tessinin in Paris.

The artistic legacy of Hållander concluded with his passing in 1980 at the age of 75, leaving behind a rich tapestry of works that continue to inspire and captivate.
