Adjustable Brass Candlestick with Snuffer
Northern Europe, 19th century

This brass candlestick features a ratcheted stem, allowing the candle socket to be raised as the wax burned down, maximising light output. The small hinged bell is a snuffer, used to extinguish the flame cleanly without scattering molten wax. A wide drip tray at the base ensured that no precious wax was wasted. Such practical fittings were common in homes, inns, and workshops across Germany and Scandinavia, where efficiency and durability were prized in everyday domestic objects.
