This brass candlestick features a ratcheted stem, allowing the candle socket to be raised as the wax burned down, maximising light output. The small hinged bell is a snuffer, used to extinguish the flame cleanly without scattering molten wax. A wide drip tray at the base ensured that no precious wax was wasted.
