Description
A small Florentine stone mosaic depicting a pair of houses set within a gently rolling landscape, composed from carefully cut slices of marble and hardstone. Rather than painted, the scene is built from the natural colours and veining of the stone itself, giving it a quiet depth and a slightly graphic quality.
Made in Florence in the mid 20th century, with a label to the reverse referencing the long tradition of mosaic work associated with the Medici workshops. These pieces were produced using techniques that date back to the Renaissance, though here applied with a pleasing simplicity.
