This early work by the Stockholm-born painter Jan Forsberg exemplifies the bold, reductive figuration that characterised Scandinavian modernism in the post-war decades. Painted when Forsberg was just twenty-five years old, the composition centres on a solitary groom or stable hand, rendered in broad planes of deep cobalt blue, who tends to a chestnut horse on his left while a dark horse stands close behind him to the right.
