This fragment presents a study of a right hand resting on dark velvet, likely the arm of a chair. The sitter wears the sober black dress typical of Spanish portraiture of the period, worn by magistrates, clergy, and the letrado class as a mark of authority. The cuff of white embroidered lace is rendered with care, its floral pattern picked out in fine detail. A hint of red fabric and architectural moulding in the background suggests a formal interior, consistent with the portrait of a jurist or official whose hand, rather than face, was chosen to convey his authority. Likely cut from a larger three-quarter or full-length portrait, the fragment retains the restrained palette and sober dignity typical of Spanish portraiture of the period, in the tradition of painters such as Sánchez Coello and Pantoja de la Cruz.
 
Condition: Fair to good, commensurate with age. Fine stable craquelure throughout; a small paint loss or surface mark near the fingers and a vertical crack to the lower left drapery, both apparently stable. Sold as viewed; in-person inspection recommended.
