Just Andersen (1884–1943)
Bowl on Foot, 1927Diameter 29.5 cm.
Inscription with dating 1927.Pewter (Disko alloy) with engraved floral decoration
This scalloped bowl exemplifies Just Andersen’s early work in pewter, a material he helped redefine in Danish decorative arts during the interwar period. Formed in a lobed, flower-like outline and raised on a small circular foot, the bowl combines gentle organic curves with the clarity of emerging Art Deco design. The lightly engraved floral motifs, positioned within each lobe, reflect Andersen’s interest in restrained ornament and his sensitivity to surface texture.
Andersen developed his own pewter alloy, known as Disko, prized for its smooth finish and cool, silvery tone. Produced in 1927, this piece belongs to a transitional moment in his practice, when traditional decorative elements coexisted with the modernist tendencies that would later define his metalwork.
