An abstract clay sculpture of a simplified torso, hand-built in a coarse, grogged clay and finished with a dry, earthy surface, possibly an oxide wash rather than a glaze. The softly modelled, organic form reflects the influence of mid-century modernist sculpture, in the manner of Henry Moore, and relates to the tradition of post-war British studio pottery.
Likely made by an independent studio potter, circa 1960–1980, the piece was conceived as a sculptural object for domestic display rather than a functional ceramic. Compact in scale yet substantial in presence, it stands approximately 26 cm tall.
