A compact and sculptural piece of mid-century lighting, this 1950s table lamp distils the era’s playful approach to form and colour. The base, a weighted black metal cone, is topped with a polished brass finial that adds a dash of formality to an otherwise jaunty silhouette. From this rises a curved brass arm, supporting a red metal shade shaped like an elongated funnel.
The lamp’s proportions are deliberately off-beat: the tall, tapering shade feels almost exuberant against the sturdy, grounded base. This sort of visual tension was typical of postwar design, when advances in manufacturing allowed designers to experiment more freely with geometry and bright, optimistic colour.
