This November, there’s simply no excuse for moping about. We’ve cobbled together a list so irresistible that even the most unimaginative among us will feel a flicker of excitement. The blockbusters alone should be enough to jolt you out of your autumnal stupor—think of it as a cultural defibrillator. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg; we’ve got more thrills than a suburban firework display, only with less risk of losing a finger. So, buckle up and prepare to be dazzled or, at the very least, mildly amused.

The first exhibition to explore the influence of art from the Islamic world on William Morris, one of Britain’s most important nineteenth-century designers and thinkers. A principal founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement, William Morris was responsible for producing hundreds of patterns for wallpapers, furnishing fabrics, carpets and embroideries, helping to introduce a new aesthetic into British interiors. While it has long been acknowledged that Morris was inspired by Islamic art, this will be the first exhibition to examine this important aspect of his artistic journey in depth.
Dive into the life and work of Dora Carrington – a remarkable artist who defied social norms with her bohemian lifestyle. This will be the first museum exhibition of works by Dora Carrington (1893-1932) in almost 30 years. The Barbican Art Gallery held the last major exhibition of her work in 1995 and in the same year Emma Thompson starred as the free-spirited painter in the film Carrington. Co-curated by Anne Chisholm, editor of Carrington’s Letters (2017) and Ariane Bankes, the exhibition will reveal the continued relevance of Carrington’s unconventional life and remarkable work. As a significant contributor to Modern British art during the interwar years and an associate of the Bloomsbury Group, Carrington was described as ‘the most neglected serious painter of her time’ by former Tate Director, Sir John Rothenstein. This exhibition aims to reposition Carrington in the history of Modern British art.
The exhibition will span paintings, drawings, and prints from across her career and include film and photographs from private and public collections. It will form a powerful portrait of Carrington, exploring her defiance of gender norms and her circle of eminent friends. Taken together, her artworks, many made for her friends, capture a Bohemian way of life: loving, creative, domestic, and intimate.

Frederic, Lord Leighton (1830-1896) is recognised as one of the most prominent figures of 19th century British art. Travel was an important part of Leighton’s life from childhood. Once settled in London in the 1860s to pursue an artistic career, he continued to make extensive trips on an annual basis. The countries that Leighton visited on at least one occasion include Austria, Algeria, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lebanon, Morocco, The Netherlands, Scotland, Spain, Switzerland, Syria and Turkey. All the pictures on display in the exhibition Leighton and Landscape were created between 1856 and his death in 1896, but despite his successful and influential career, this aspect of his work across 40 years was largely unknown in his lifetime, and this remains the case today.
This may be, in part, because Leighton was an intensely private individual, choosing to live and travel alone. He scarcely ever exhibited the landscapes. Upon his death, he left no journals and his letters barely referred to his personal circumstances, making these landscape sketches additionally fascinating and precious, offering insights into moments in his life.

Francis, Henrietta and Isabel, 28th November, 1 - 2 pm, Room 18, Floor 3, National Portrait Gallery,
Join them for a lecture led by Carol Jacobi, as she outlines the representation of women throughout Francis Bacon’s portraiture. Bacon’s famous portraits began with an off-hand request to Henrietta Moraes, "I’ve decided to paint a few of my friends." For 30 years he concentrated on a handful of people he loved. Intimacy was essential to Bacon’s redefinition of portraiture, painting and the human condition. He challenged the sexual conventions of his time and the complexity of his relationships inform their appreciation of his paintings of men. His portraits of women, however, even iconic works such as Lying Figure with Hypodermic Syringe and Portrait of Isabel Rawsthorne Standing in a Street in Soho, have been seen through surprisingly simple conventions of the femme fatale. Join Carol Jacobi to unmask the myths of Henrietta Moraes and Isabel Rawsthorne, to meet two extraordinary people and to look again at a few of the nearly 40 paintings.
