Cultural, Culinary, and Creative Things To Do This September

September is a significant month for those with children. It’s likely bittersweet to see your return to the classroom, but it might also grant you a well-deserved lunch break to enjoy a more grown-up agenda. For those of us without children, the world truly is our oyster—within the limits of our purse strings—and we have some truly glorious things to delight in this month.

There are antiques fairs galore, a bountiful array of new restaurants and of course as many talks as you can shake a stick at.

Sam is an ingredients-led chef who has long been fascinated with food and its production. Hailing from Macclesfield on the edge of the Peak District, Sam began his career with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall at River Cottage HQ in East Devon, surrounded by farm-to-table food and craft-based cookery. Sam’s food is humble, unfussy, and delicious, using proper craft techniques like butchery, bread making, and preservation. Ingredients are sourced conscientiously and used so that the guests feel connected to the rivers, fields and forests surrounding them.

An unparalleled selection of the world's leading photographers, telling the story of modern and contemporary photography. Discover iconic images across subjects such as fashion, celebrity, reportage and the male body.

This summer, as part of Beyond Fashion and The RHS Botanical Art & Photography Show, Saatchi Lates offer Art After Dark on selected Fridays. Join them for the final Lates event of the season – a Voguing Life Drawing workshop! Voguing is a dance technique that emerged from Harlem's drag scene in the 1980’s. LGBT+ circles, populated mainly by New York’s Black and Latino communities, would throw competitions known as “balls”, where participants would perform drag, dance and catwalk for trophy prizes. Named after the famous magazine, it takes direct inspiration from high fashion poses, with added exaggerations and distinctive hand gestures. In the inspiring setting of their Beyond Fashion exhibition, voguing models and an MC will perform while you sketch.

Stop by the MG&Co. Hardware Store for a calendar of exclusive events and workshops. In Notting Hill, they’ll be opening the doors to their first Hardware store. Step into the MG&Co. world, shop their full Hardware collection, and join one of their many workshops.

Find yourself in plant paradise this September at their Autumn Plants & Crafts Fair. It’s your chance to immerse yourself in a sea of colourful blooms and rare plants, as over 20 local and specialist nursuries return to Somerleyton Hall Gardens for one of the biggest plant fairs in the area. It’s the ideal place to get gardening inspiration, and pick up some excellent growing advice from the experts. Plus your tickets gives you access to our beautiful 12 acre gardens, which will be in full beautiful bloom.

Introducing An Italian in Somerset, they invite you to enjoy legendary Italian bonhomie through dishes rooted in traditions, care and imagination. Their tables are for food. And for family stories. The menu is an exploration of traditional northern Italian recipes featuring an array of antipasti, homemade pastas and risottos and daily specials cooked over fire. Using freshly grown seasonal ingredients from the walled garden and surrounding area, our dishes blend the best of both words – quintessential Englishness with Italian culinary flair.

Several acres of garden, orchard and paddock surround the last gatehouse fragment of the medieval Bampton Castle, partially moated with walled kitchen garden, a productive greenhouse and farmyard with a variety of farm animals. This project begun by Emma Bridgewater and Matthew Rice is 12 years old so now 'bearing fruit' but will always be in a state of permanent change. Delicious teas and vintage tractors.

Join them for a guided tour of The Cosmic House, one of the world’s most important examples of Post-Modern architecture, opened to the public in September 2021. Situated in London’s Holland Park, it became the UK’s first Grade I listed Post-Modern interior. Begun in 1978, the conversion of the house was a collaboration between Charles and Maggie Jencks and the architect Terry Farrell with contributions from Piers Gough, Eduardo Paolozzi, Michael Graves, Celia Scott, Allen Jones and others. Its symbolic architecture, complex iconography and cosmic references are all imbued with Charles’ characteristic learning and wit.

They are delighted to share that they will be welcoming distinguished British printmaker and textile designer, Molly Mahon to The Wild Store for their next pop-up. The pop-up will celebrate and launch their beautiful new hand block printed Tapes, a new exquisite coloured woven cloth and some fun coloured plain fabrics inspired by the colours of India. Adding to the excitement, each day they will be putting together a brand new tablescape with the opportunity for a lucky visitor to win the complete set daily!

Beatie Bryant returns to her rural home in Norfolk, inflamed with political zeal from her time spent living in London. As the family anxiously prepares for the arrival of her firebrand activist boyfriend Ronnie, Beatie struggles to fit back into her old way of life. As Beatie’s radical new ideals fail to land with her traditional family, the differences between young and old are laid bare. Diyan Zora (Tom Fool; English) directs a new production of Arnold Wesker’s lyrical, passionate play about a young woman’s journey to self-discovery which, together with John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger, changed British theatre forever. The mirror they held up to 1950s society is now angled towards 2024, with the two plays running alongside each other in repertory for 11 weeks, as part of the Almeida’s Angry and Young season.

‘Vibrations’ showcases a new collection of weavings inspired by silent meditation, where thoughts fade away, and the self is felt as tingling, fizzing, and popping sensations, expressed through vibrating fields of colour. The woven paintings emerge through a subconscious process, with each line building on the last, and accidents redirecting the pattern. Forming abstract landscapes with the unexpectedness of encounters with nature. The works often inadvertently reflect deep memories and gentle observations, such as of rippling water and rock formations. Some of the small weavings were made on an artist residency sailing in the Inner Hebrides, Scotland, with Sail Britain and the Wilderness Art Collective. They incorporate colours and textures from the coastline.

Decorative Furnishings will be holding one of their first pop ups! It will be sure to have extraordiniarly, beautiful and exciting pieces to for sale! It should not be missed!

A world-famous children’s author under threat. A battle of wills in the wake of scandal. And one chance to make amends… It’s the summer of 1983, The Witches is about to hit the shelves, and Roald Dahl is making last-minute edits. But the outcry at his recent, explicitly antisemitic article won’t die down.

Across a single afternoon at his family home, and rocked by an unexpectedly explosive confrontation, Dahl is forced to choose: make a public apology or risk his name and reputation. Inspired by real events, Mark Rosenblatt’s debut play explores with dark humour the difference between considered opinion and dangerous rhetoric. Directed by Nicholas Hytner (Straight Line Crazy, La Belle Sauvage) and starring Tony and Golden Globe-winner John Lithgow (Killers of the Flower Moon, The Crown), alongside Olivier Award-winner Elliot Levey (Cold War, Cabaret, Good), Giant offers a complicated portrait of a fiendishly charismatic icon.

Paula Rego was one of the great artists of our time whose work tells stories that combine fantasy, imagination, innocence, and cruelty in order to explore life in all its complexity and mystery. This new exhibition casts a spotlight on her remarkable practice as a graphic artist, and particularly the British literary influences that inspired her most ambitious bodies of works in printmaking: Nursery Rhymes, Peter Pan and Jane Eyre. Showcasing each series of prints combined with unseen preparatory sketches, etching plates and other ephemera, this rare exhibition offers an insight into how Rego transforms this material into startlingly original and unexpected pictures.
