We love seeing designers' work, so here is an index of products they offer that you might not be aware of.
I had thought of doing this article a while ago, but then I saw the FT beat me to the punch with their article 'A shoppable version of our world': why interior designers are turning to retail'. It's not hugely surprising that this topic has been on the minds of those in the world of interiors. It seems like every interior designer is now going into product. I don't blame them; Interior Design is a stressful business. You have a client, a budget, a builder, your suppliers - all of whose problems fall to you. Long gone are the days of the 'Dolly Decorators' who would come in, choose a couple of fabrics, paste some wallpaper to the wall and jobs a good 'un'. Now, you have to deal with load-bearing walls and electrical plans, not to mention the clients. Yes, I can see why the product's allure is so compelling. Especially now, everyone wants to be the designer of their home, and they want to use it as their calling card. So what a clever way of needling your way into that process than designing a chair, a doorknob, or a fabric.
I am all for it. I love product, I find it truly exciting to see what people come up with, how the public reacts to them and, in some cases, the genuine frenzy surrounding them. The fact that the UK is becoming such a leader in the industry makes the whole thing more thrilling. I have toyed with bringing out products for some time, but the genuine headache of getting them to market and anticipating the public's reaction has put me right off. So hats off to those brave people below, and three cheers for the extremely fetching potential additions to our home.
