London never ceases to surprise me. Having lived in West London all my life, you'd think my curiosity might have eventually led me to Osterley House. But no. Somehow, I missed it. Door to door, it took us twenty minutes - which has gone some way to rekindling my affection for Shepherd’s Bush. To drive twenty minutes and feel as though you’ve been deposited into the bosom of the countryside is frankly absurd. And yet, thanks to the National Trust, this corner of London remains miraculously intact, much as Robert Adam left it - all symmetry, grandeur and confident restraint.
