Recently, a few of my friends have made big changes. There’s something about change — it’s contagious. It makes the other party, in this case myself, look at one’s own life and feel a little rocky in its steadiness. As some of you may know, I recently had a baby, and by god, that commitment can make you feel cemented to the next forty years (god willing). So, daydreams and a sense of freedom (however fanciful) become completely necessary. And as with any bouts of anxiety, I turn to property. In those properties, we can sink our dreams and, perhaps, one dear day our funds.
Change may not be on the horizon for all of us, but at least these twenty five beautiful European properties are there to make us feel like an adventure could be just around the corner.
A stone house that does exactly what you want a French stone house to do: sits quietly in a sunlit, south-facing courtyard, waiting for someone to pour a glass of rosé and settle in for the afternoon. Inside, it’s full of the good stuff—elegant fireplaces that haven’t been tampered with, proper beamed ceilings, and tiles that know how to take a scuff. It’s rustic, it’s charming, but crucially, it doesn’t shout about it.
