It is a truth universally acknowledged that a person in possession of a Wi-Fi connection must be in want of a better working environment. The great promise of remote work — all sun-dappled mornings, creative freedom, and the gentle clink of a teaspoon in a homemade cup of tea — has, for many, curdled. We are not so much working from home as waiting for Zoom.
No longer tethered to the tyranny of the desk, we roam from bed to table to vaguely ergonomic kitchen chair, dragging laptops and existential dread behind us. The line between work and leisure blurs until we find ourselves replying to emails in a face mask or folding towels mid-call. We are getting things done, yes, but not quite at the level we know we could.
