The End of an Era at House & Garden, May 2026
We are unsure of the year my mother, Liz Elliot, started at House & Garden. She says it was during a very hot summer, which, according to Google, would place it somewhere around 1990 or 1995. Sadly my only memory of a hot summer in the nineties is my father taking a photograph of me standing inside the fridge holding a piece of paper with the temperature written on it. Thank God we managed to preserve that tiny scrap of posterity.
I only remember my mother working. There was never a time when she didn’t. She always believed it was important to have your own money and your own career, so work became a constant in our lives. First there was the big black bow tied into her long hair as she left for the office, then later the short chop which has now been her signature for the past twenty five years. The exact year may be hazy, but her time at House & Garden has been a constant for as long as I can remember.
