On a bustling weekend in London, I found myself at the British Museum, that hive of activity where chaos meets culture. The staff were preparing for an evening fashion show while contending with the usual Sunday throngs, creating a sensory overload—though, in this case, a rather exhilarating one. Amidst the clamour, I stumbled upon the Moon Jar from the Joseon Period, arguably the most beautiful object I’ve ever encountered. Acquired by Bernard Leach in 1935, it eventually found its way into the studio of his friend, the legendary Lucie Rie, where it remained until her death. While most of us may never possess a masterpiece like the Moon Jar—or a Leach or a Rie, for that matter—we can still dip our toes into the world of ceramics. There’s always the chance of finding a piece that, if not quite as transcendent, can still lift the heart, if only a little less than mine did before that sublime Moon Jar.
