Who doesn't love the charm of a good lampshade? It can, in fact, make a room. In terms of interiors, it's the chef's kiss. Yes, you can make a case for cushions, but they are flung aside and sat on, whereas the noble lampshade sits there in all its illuminated glory.
I remember the home of Maxime de la Falaise, featured in House & Garden. In the corner was the most marvelous shade; it just made the room that bit better, adding a sprinkling of Yves Saint Laurent glamour and perfectly illustrating my point.
Below, we have put together a list of the greatest lampshades on the market, in our humble and probably correct opinion. From Mark Betty's heart-stoppingly beautiful handcrafted lampshades to H&M's more readily available options from H&M, we hope there is something here for everyone.
One tip I did read about buying a lampshade was that the size of the lampshade should be proportional to the lamp base. A good rule of thumb is that the height of the shade should be about two-thirds the height of the lamp base. The width of the shade should be at least as wide as the broadest part of the base and ideally about twice as wide. Although I am sure they are right, and for a perfectly crafted room, that is probably the correct way to go about things. But between you and an I don't mind a little top-heavy/ bottom-heavy pairing; it always adds a little bon vive to a room, a touch of comedy.
