For years we’ve been devotees of Airbnb, though not, I should stress, of the company itself. The corporation leaves me cold. What I admire are the homes, the good ones. Not the hollow-eyed investment shells you can spot from a mile off: leathery bar stools, chesterfield sofas, karate-chopped cushions.


What I love are the homes from homes, the ones that belong to someone with taste, books, fires, good crockery, and low lighting. A home where the character of the walls matters as much as the view beyond them. Add a decent walk and a meal cooked by anyone but me, and I’m yours.


Over the years we have gathered countless Airbnb recommendations for every kind of escape, from birthdays to breakups to the simple need for a change of scene. This is the collection that has risen to the top, the places that consistently deliver. Whether you are leaving tomorrow or planning something later in the year, these are the ones we actually return to. We will keep it up to date, removing anything that fades and adding anything that proves itself.
