A Ravishing Georgian House on the River Wissey — Now for Sale
by Alice Camilla Campbell Darby (Nee Rice)

I’m hardly in the habit of refusing a good house story, particularly when the house in question is quite this handsome. So when Alice got in touch to say her marvellous property had just come to market, I naturally insisted she write something for the Tat audience. A home this graceful, this full of light and possibility, simply had to be shared. And, thank heavens, she obliged.

We were drawn to the house for its unique historic past aswell as the size of the rooms and windows which bring in so much light. The Georgian hallway, painted in ‘Borrowed Light’ by Farrow and Ball, is particularly wonderful as once the door closes behind you it feels like you’ve entered a completely different world.
We are particularly delighted with the sitting room which was used as a study by the previous owners but is now very much a family room. Painted in Farrow and Ball’s ‘Wevet’ with ‘Old School House’ on the woodwork it’s a peaceful bright room where we spend much of our time beside the fire.
The first floor drawing room is also a delight with four south facing windows and impactful ochre wallpaper by William Morris above the wooden wall panelling. We have hosted parties for over 20 guests in this room but it is equally magical with just one or two.
We have hugely enjoyed curating the interiors for this house from the antique Persian rugs to the pair of ormolu clocks which belonged to my grandfather which sit on the mantelpieces at either end of the drawing room. This house has a lot of scope, given the proportions of the rooms, for the owners to really play around with colour and interiors.
As a family we are always drawn to water. The River Wissey is a short walk down from the house and is a glorious spot for rowing, canoeing and swimming all year round.
