In October 2024, my husband and I set off on what we optimistically framed as a delightful weekend getaway—a little treat, or so we told ourselves. These days, everything seems to qualify as 'a treat,' mostly because everything is so absurdly expensive. You’d think that by your mid-thirties, child-free and relatively unencumbered, such indulgences might feel lighter on the wallet, but no—their weight presses harder than ever.

Perhaps the unease began even before we arrived, with the interiors setting the tone. I’ll try to keep the snobbery in check, but it’s hard not to wince at the sight of gold antlers, oversized Chesterfield sofas, and those ubiquitous knock-offs of Pierre Jeanneret chairs that plague these spaces like a design epidemic. The moment I see them, my heart sinks, and no amount of expertly made martinis can wash away the aftertaste of their mediocrity.

The trip itself was pleasant enough, though the charm lay more in the walks than in the hotel. The place, let’s just say, seemed to be operating under the siege of rising wages and inflation gnawing tirelessly at everyone’s heels. By Sunday, we’d come to an unsettling conclusion: perhaps these places are no longer for people like us. Maybe their rooms are now occupied by the super-wealthy. It’s hardly a tragedy—a thoroughly first-world problem that won’t disturb my sleep—but it did spark a thought: perhaps it’s time to rekindle an old love affair with the humble B&B.

The B&B, with its wobbly charm and breakfasts featuring slightly overcooked sausages, feels like the perfect antidote to these overstyled spaces. It fits snugly within the Tat ethos: spending your money where it matters, where the effort is tangible, where there’s a heartbeat behind the hospitality.

Perhaps that’s why, despite my intolerance for hotel interiors, I find myself rarely bothered by people’s homes. Even if someone’s abode is plastered with Chanel logos and upholstered in silver lamé, I can always find joy in a personal touch. Any effort, however modest, feels remarkable. There’s no performance, no tired aesthetic checklist, just the genuine warmth of a space that someone has cared about. So here we are, banging the drum for the B&B and all the charm it has to uncover.
